Hip Hotel - The Strand Hotel, NYC

The Hotel - Where to stay when you are in New York City?  The options and price range vary widely and no one wants to blow their entire budget on a hotel.   We were headed to NYC for a wedding and wanted something mid-range that didn't involve shared bathrooms.  We really enjoyed The Strand, a new boutique hotel that just opened up three months ago in Midtown Manhattan.  The Strand is mere blocks away from The Empire State Building and fully embraces a 1930s art deco theme with a modern twist.

Free Breakfast - The European Continental Breakfast is complimentary and served everyday until 11 AM.  The spread goes beyond your typical stale muffins and toast.  They offer fresh cut fruit, granola yogurt parfaits, bagels & cream cheese, mini egg sanwiches, mini proscuitto & brie sandwiches along with coffee, tea, and juice.  They really go above and beyond and I have never had the pleasure of having a complimentary breakfast in a NYC hotel.  It was a nice surprise.
The Room - We booked a Superior Guest Room via Travelzoo and paid only $159/night as part of their grand opening specials.  Rates generally run around $205 USD/night and up, but includes free WiFi, bathrobes, USA Today & The NY Times, a mini-bar and an iPod docking station in your room.  The room was a bit small as they all are in Manhattan, but we have stayed in tinier rooms and found this spacious enough for the price.  The bathroom was incredibly compact, modern and efficient.  Everything was very clean and we received housekeeping twice a day.  Our only minor complaint is that you can hear people in the hallways and the odd door slamming as the rooms are really close together.  The hotel is not a shoddy renovation, but a brand new building which exists in place of a former parking lot.
The Location - The Strand is perfectly central and is only a $6 cab ride to Columbus Circle and Central Park.  Going to SoHo is only about $9 and it is a 5 minute cab ride from Penn Station.  If you fly into any of the local airports, you can take the AirTrain to a hub station and take a train into Penn Station.  From there, you can easily catch a cab to the hotel.  Herald Square, Rockefeller Centre and ample shopping are all within walking distance.  A gorgeous rooftop patio is the perfect place for a nightcap with a clear view of The Empire State Building.  We would definitely stay here again.
