Urban Eats @ Holt's Cafe, Toronto

Caesar Salad

Holt's Cafe is the perfect little spot to meet a girlfriend for lunch.  You can grab a gourmet salad or sandwich, catch up on gossip and then go look at shoes!  The space is bright, open, full of natural light and overlooks Bloor Street from the mezzanine level of high-end department store, Holt Renfrew.

My lunching partner, Lori Hutchinson of The Caketress ordered the Holts Caesar Salad ($12) with Berkshire rinds, croutons, parmesan and creamy garlic dressing.  It was definitely a nice meal size and looked filling.  But why not order the Truffle Potato Chips ($6) with sea salt and chives to share and round out that pesky healthy salad part?

Poached Eggs Tartine

I was feeling like something a little more decadent and brunch-like, perhaps a tartine on bread flown in from France?  Quite possibly the opposite of locavore movement, Holt Renfrew flies in bread from renowned boulangerie, Poilane three times a week.  The Poached Eggs Tartine ($15) was like a piece of art on my plate.  Smoked salmon is layered on to a slice of Poilane bread and then three perfectly poached eggs are placed on top.  My tartine is then sprinkled with wild mushrooms, oven roasted tomatoes and fresh basil.  I think I would take this over Eggs Benedict any day.

Apple Brown Betty

Lori being a pastry chef herself, could not say no to dessert!  Her Apple Brown Betty ($8) came in a cute individual creuset ramekin with fresh berries and spiced marscapone.  My Chopped Fresh Fruit ($8) came in an edible gingersnap cookie bowl with a chocolate coated bottom that probably counteracted the low calorie count I was hoping for.  BUT it was absolutely divine because the bowl was eaten and there was nothing but fruit left on my plate.

The Dining Room

If you are running late, Holt's also offers complimentary valet parking Thursday to Saturday from 10-6 PM.  The cafe is open for lunch and serves brunch on the weekends.  If you don't have time for a full sit-down, swing by the concourse level take away counter.  The food is just as high in quality and the prices will make you rethink the value of the food court.
