Hip + Urban Girl of the Week: Natalie Ho

Our new bi-weekly column will feature a local hip + urban girl of the week, who encompasses a fabulous attitude, job and lifestyle. We will feature a mix of entrepreneurs and urban professionals who are inspiring to follow. This week we interview Natalie Ho of My Little Secrets:

So tell us about your business!
My Little Secrets was founded in March 2010 and is an online retail stored based out of Toronto. We offer products that are unique, fashionable, and functional. We specialize in beauty, fashion and travel products. Our mandate is to provide women with 'secrets' to help their everyday lives, helping them look great, feel great and flawless. Our products are all tried and tested by me and I also provide tips and tricks on how to use them for the best results. We welcome our customers to submit their little secrets and or problems they would like us to solve.

What made you want to start your own company? I believe I am an entrepreneur at heart. I worked for a start up company, LOGiQ3 Inc (reinsurance consulting company) since the day I graduated from University. As a part of a small team of three, I learned the ins and outs of running a start-up shop and knew that I would never want to work for anyone else but myself..

How did the idea come about?
The idea of My Little Secrets came about when I was reading an article in INC Magazine. The article featured a pair of foldable ballet flats - Fit In Clouds (now, a partner of MLS). As a consultant at my day job, I travel often - so a pair of foldable ballet flats would certainly save the day! I thought to myself - how great would it be to have a place where I can purchase a collection of items that could help me day to day? Be it when I'm travelling, or when I'm having a flat hair day, or wearing a backless dress. That is how My Little Secrets came about - thanks to INC and Fit In Clouds.

What did you study in University/College?

I studied a specialist degree in Actuarial Science and a minor in Statistics at the University of Toronto.

Where are your favourite places to hang out in Toronto?
King Street West (Century Room, Cobra, Cheval), Queen Street West (shops and restaurants), and the Distillery District.

Best places to shop in the city?
Queen Street West, Yorkville, and digging threw Vintage stores at the Kensington Market and St. Lawrence Market.

Tell us about your neighbourhood and what you like best about it?
I live by the Distillery District and I absolutely love it. There is something neat about being in a historical neighborhood, where there is a mix of vintage and modern. I also enjoy being close to the St. Lawrence Market as I can pick up fresh meat and food.

What life advice do you have for hip + urban girls out there trying to figure out what they want to do?
My advice is listen to your heart and your desires. If you have an idea, try it out because nothing is impossible. Nothing is unachievable as long as you put your mind to it. Starting a business requires time, effort, and energy. So if you have passion for something, put your time, effort, and energy into it! Don't ever make excuses up for yourself, if you have a plan, stick to it and execute. One day, you can relax and look at what you've accomplished!
