Hip Getaways - Muskoka Lakes Winery

A hip + urban girl 'must stop' when in cottage country is The Muskoka Lakes Winery on The Johnston's Cranberry Marsh in Bala, Ontario.  We spent a lazy Sunday afternoon tasting some exquisite fruit wine that went down literally like candy.  If you like a sweet taste, trade in those terrible wine coolers and trade-up for a delicious bottle of Cranberry Blueberry Wine.  Chill until ice cold and enjoy on a hot summer day.  Just think of all the antioxidants when you are pouring yourself that second glass...

Launched in 2001 by The Johnston Family, the winery uses local fruit and their own cranberries to create their award-winning recipes.  Wine tastings are all complimentary and we sampled 6-8 different dry, tart and sweet dessert wines.  Take your favourite bottle home with you (from $16.95) and a bag of dark chocolate-covered cranberries.  We also purchased a bottle of pure cranberry juice with no sweetener added.  It is absolutely perfect to add two tablespoons to a chilled glass of Perrier or Ginger Ale with a squirt of lime.  Make sure you give yourself some time for a hike through their Cranberry Trails.
We found lots of different cranberry products for sale including wine jelly, jams, spreads, juice, dried cranberries, cranberry tea, sauces, vinegars and chutneys.  Anything you could do with a cranberry, they have done here!  I can only imagine how Cranberry wine would be the most amazing pairing with Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner.  I had originally heard of this place when Wendy brought over a bottle to my house for a BBQ.  It was definitely a unique wine and something I had never tried before.  Of course, after that I was hooked!
Can't make it all the way to Muskoka?  The LCBO currently carries two of their wines, Cranberry and Cranberry/Blueberry Wine.  Muskoka Lakes Winery will also be showcasing at The Gourmet Wine and Food Expo Toronto this November 2010.  Make sure you stop by and try a sample.

  1. Thanks for this info! I went to the Bala Cranberry Festival that's usually held in the fall years ago and really enjoyed the cranberry experience. You should check out if you've never been. It smells like Apple and Cranberry cider everywhere!

Must head over to the LCBO in the morning and look for this wine. And get some good ol' Québécois fromages.

  2. I have been meaning to go every year. It sounds like the perfect Fall day trip. Let me know if you go and blog about it this year!
