When I think of summer, I think clambake! We were very lucky to find Tail O' the Pup, the Adirondack's only 'Lobster-BBQ Family Restaurant' while visiting Lake Placid, NY. The smell of smoked meat in the summer air, melts my foodie heart. The bonus is the live cover band and outdoor tented dining room which feels like a big ol' family picnic. Our Lobster Clambake ($29.99) came with 1 1/4 pound lobster, half dozen steamed littleneck clams, homemade potato salad and corn on the cob (pictured left). Tail O' the Pup is a fun food stop....
Yes the place is kitschy, but we were on vacation and were up for a bit of kitsch. The food is decent, the atmosphere is fun and we love just eating on picnic tables outdoors. It's nothing fancy, but it feels quintessentially summer to us. We just wanted some down home BBQ and seafood. Tail O' the Pup is like a little campsite with small cabins that house the bar, ice cream and gift shop. There's even an arcade, pool table and a full playground for kids to go crazy in, while their parents relax and enjoy dinner. We arrived on Wednesday which was all-you-can-eat chicken and rib night!
We ordered a side of homemade Cornbread on the recommendation of our server Jesse, who swears by them. The consistency is perfect and that glaze you see is honey drizzled on top. Oh. My. Yum. Those three puppies only set us back a mere $1.95! Delicious, homemade and a great value. Um...where do I get more of these? They could easily replace a two-bite brownie addiction.
The BBQ Texas Beef Brisket Sandwich ($8.95) came with a side of coleslaw and a dill pickle spear. The sauteed red onion provided a nice sweet texture and were smothered in BBQ sauce goodness. The brisket itself had a nice smoked flavour and is left on the pit for ten hours before it is thinly sliced and served on a toasted bun.
We loved all the cute decor and giant lobster sign (above). Tail O' the Pup is a total road meal stop just off the side of the highway. We definitely recommend it for a fun dinner out when visiting Lake Placid. The prices are incredibly reasonable and service is friendly with an army of college students taking care of you. The menu is massive, so there is something for everyone. The live cover band even takes requests and played 'Friday I'm in Love' for us by The Cure, which was surreal and awesome all at the same time - considering we were on the side of a highway eating BBQ and lobster in a tent! The lobster by the way is fresh and brought in everyday from Maine.
Lots of outdoor seating. The atmosphere is very casual.
