Sparkling Suggestions for New Years Eve

Sparkling wine expert, Melyssa Wrigley – gives us her suggestions on which bubbly to pop on New Years Eve.  Her list includes wines for all hip + urban girl budgets priced from high-to-low.  Now all you have to do is find someone to *kiss*…

Krug Grande Cuvee In Gift Box (VINTAGES 38562, $269.95)
While definitely a ‘splurge’, this Champagne is clearly worth every penny.  It shows a bright deep gold colour and boasts aromas of lemon biscuits, spices and some yeasty notes.  On the delicate palate, notes of citrus with a very soft mousse and a long steely finish.  This will certainly put some class in your glass!

Piper Heidseick Brut Champagne (LCBO 462432, $49.95)
Stylish and sophisticated, this sparkler gives all the glitz and glamour Champagne has to offer without breaking the bank.  It has a pale straw colour with apple butter, popcorn and brioche aromas.  On the palate more apple comes through with a fresh citrusy finish.  A classic for canapés.

Krug Grand Cuvee will set you back close to three bills.  More suggestions...

Santa Margherita Prosecco Di Valdobbiadene (VINTAGES 687582, $17.95)
Their Pinot Grigio is already the best-selling wine in the LCBO, so how could we go wrong adding the Santa Margherita Prosecco Di Valdobbiadene to our Vintages Essentials Portforlio?!  Light straw in colour, this Prosecco has a mineral and light peach aroma.  Fresh and lively on the palate, with a citrus note, it’s the perfect base for a classic Bellini or a sure bet for brunch.

Yellow Tail Bubbles (LCBO 50625, $13.95)
Want a fun and light bubbly that doesn’t need a special occasion?  Look to Yellow Tail Bubbles with its light, off-dry style and uber-pretty nose of Muscat grapes, roses and custard.  The aroma replays on the palate, make this bubbly an easy choice for spicy foods, sushi appetizers or simply as a ‘just because’ wine!

Open Sparkling VQA ($13.95)
This local sparkler 'opens' up with aromas of citrus and baked apple cinnamon notes.  The bubbles are persistent and lively and the palate sings of red delicious apple and pear. With a hint of mandarin orange on the finish, this off-dry bubbly would be the perfect Chinese take-out partner.
