Spring Runway Trends 101

As far as the calendar is concerned, spring is officially here and this season’s trends beckon. This time around they’re super simple to incorporate into your wardrobe, even if you’re a fashion novice. Here’s a quick guide to spring’s biggest trends from s/s 2011 collections and ways to make them work for you.

All Brights at Gucci

Colour blocking, achieved by wearing a single vibrant hue for each article of clothing, is hot this season. The trick to this trend is finding the colours that work best for you. Shop with an honest friend if you’re unsure or seek expert advice from a stylist. The it colours are hot pink and coral so pick up an item in those shades if you’re not ready to go rainbow bright.

All Whites at Ralph Lauren

White begs to be worn head to toe this season paired with subtle neutral accents. It’s not the most forgiving colour and can be a bit sheer so look for pieces that are flowy and lined if you’re worried about hiding those problem areas.

Rebecca Taylor Plays with Pattern

This season pattern really is for everyone. More conservative types can stick to classic stripes or polka dots, girly girls can embrace romantic pastel florals, and bolder gals can step into wild animal or more kitschy prints. Pattern is also huge in accessories so step out of your comfort zone with a patterned scarf, shoe or handbag to mix up your look.

Sexy Sheer at Dolce & Gabbana

Some lingerie inspired lace and sheer looks left little to the imagination on the runway but layer pieces over a slip, tank or bralette, and this risque look is far more wearable. Sheer accents like a lace hem or a sheer ruffle neckline are also a la mode.

Wide Legs & Long Hemlines at Monique Lhuillier

New dimensions for bottoms are last on the list because honestly, they are the most likely to be here today and gone tomorrow. If you’re going to test drive these possibly fleeting trends go for a fitted top and pair sky high pointy toed heels with wide leg pants and calf-length midi skirts. Low heels or flats still work with full-length maxi skirts for that relaxed boho vibe.

Above all, enjoy the chance to wear lighter fabrics and do try to embrace even just a teensy bit of colour for spring. It’s really only a few short months before we’re back to black.
