Bethenny Frankel Brings Skinnygirl to Toronto

Guest post by: Jenn Kennedy

On Friday June 17th, the Skinnygirl Margarita made its Canadian debut. Hundreds lined up at Toronto’s Summerhill LCBO to meet Bethenny Frankel - renowned natural food chef, three time New York Times Bestselling author, reality television star and the creator of the Skinnygirl Margarita.

I'm a huge fan, of Bethenny and of the Skinnygirl Margarita, I find it hard not to be. After all, Frankel is known for being an authority on natural food and drink.

In 2009, she developed the Skinnygirl Margarita to meet the demand for a low-calorie, read to serve cocktail. "I created the Skinnygirl Margarita because everyone loves margaritas, but no one wants the guilt or the calories” says Frankel.

Frankel is no stranger to taking high calorie food and drinks and making them her own by cutting down the calories while still maintaining the integrity of the flavour. Skinnygirl contains natural flavours, lightly sweetened with agave nectar, and made with premium Blue Agave clear Tequila. Some margaritas can pack on as much as 500 calories for a four ounce serving; Frankel’s version is just 110 calories for 4.2 ounces. After Bethenny let her friends in on her “secret” Margarita recipe during the first season of the Real Housewives of NYC, the Skinnygirl Margarita was born and it’s only grown in popularity since.

I felt a sense of pride when I met Bethenny. I felt as though we were kindred spirits. I had watched her develop on her multiple reality television series, from a budding betting entrepreneur to full out icon. Here she was, a woman who made no excuses for and no secret about what she wanted out of life. She wanted it all, the husband, the baby and a successful career. She got it.

Although my encounter with Bethenny Frankel was brief, I was able to convey to her what an impression she had made on me. I’m a big believer in making things happen and being your own cheerleader. Bethenny lives according to the same philosophy, even when companies said no to her product at first, she believed that her product would revolutionize the liquor industry. The company was bought in 2011 by Beam Global Spirits & Wine Inc. and Praxis PR, who organized the successful event. Frankel continues to work with Beam as the brand's collaborator, developer and marketer.

As I was standing in line with a fellow blogger and friend, I knew we felt the same admiration for Frankel, a woman's woman and a brilliant business woman in what some say is a man's world. I came home, had a friend over and opened a bottle of Skinnygirl. We raised our glasses and toasted to our own successes, present and future. After all, if Bethenny can have her "ever after", why can’t we?

The Skinnygirl Margarita is now available at the Summerhill LCBO in Toronto and will begin appearing on liquor store shelves across Canada this summer, starting in Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario and Saskatchewan this month.
