Marlene Cook, founder of Woofstock, started the High Tea events five years ago as the official launch to Woofstock. This year, comedian Nikki Payne (Much Music Video on Trail) and a celebrity guest "Lady Gaga" Look-Alike hosted the festivities.
The day’s main event was the runway of costumes - dogs sashaying their finery to win best in show. The winner was an Italian Mastiff named Loki, who came dressed as Natalie Portman’s “Black Swan” character – complete with tutu and mask. However, all dogs were winners at the event and every dog was treated to trays of gourmet treats. If there was only one day for a dog to exhibit ‘bad behavior’ by standing on the table, it was today!
For all the pomp and glamour, Woofstock High Tea raises awareness and support for various animal-rights organizations. This year, donations were collected for the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA). WSPA has been fighting and promoting animal welfare worldwide for the past 25 years. Donations raised at the High Tea event will be used to assist animals displaced by natural disasters – more recently, the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
Woofstock takes over the St. Lawrence Market next weekend (June 11-12 between 10am - 6pm). Admission is free for all doggies and their owners. . I know where I will be that weekend and hope to see you there!
Thanks to our guest-blogger, Sandy Sun for covering this doggylicious event!
