What do they know in California?
They know fish tacos.
We found some of the best at The Reel Inn in Malibu after hearing about this seafood shack on the side of Highway One from different guidebooks and travel magazines.
We ordered the Fish Tacos ($10.95) which came with all the fixin's on a bed of homestyle potatoes and a side of coleslaw and they did not disappoint. I could gnaw on the side of my laptop right now, it was that good. If you can't commit to a whole meal, you can order up just one for $3.50. If fish is not your thing, chicken and shrimp are also options.
We loved the casual beach house feel in the dining room and the kitsch that went with.
The no-nonsense chalkboard menu keeps service effective and smooth. The Reel Inn is organized and the service is still friendly. The menu was so big that it was tough deciding what to order. I went with an old favourite...
Lucky for me the Fish & Chips was the special of the day and a steal for $6.95. This included two luscious pieces of fried fish, chunky cut french fries and perfect coleslaw. The kitchen calls your number for pick-up over a loudspeaker and you slide your plate over to the topping bar where lemon wedges, salsa, tartar sauce, ketchup and vinegar awaits your hot crispy food.
The fish was flaky and fresh. I thought the batter was good, but I prefer a light beer batter usually. Overall, we were really happy with the food and the price. It was everything we would want from a seafood shack.
