A sponsored hip + urban girl post.
You might have noticed that Wendy and I like to travel a lot. Just this past year, the two of us have gone to Costa Rica, Brazil, Peru, California, Miami, Dominican Republic, Amsterdam and Paris. Every trip causes us to reflect on the cultural things we admire and want to incorporate into our lifestyles here. Anyone else in for two-hour lunches and a siesta?
Travelling makes us more empathetic, it forces us to re-evaluate the life we want for ourselves and what makes us happy. It was during a ten-day trip to Europe last fall that my husband and I decided that we didn’t want to buy a big house or a mega condo. Instead, we focused on living small, living well and not working so hard all the time. Sometimes it takes a getaway from your everyday to be able to see these things for yourself.
Evan Malach (above) from Toronto wants to give underprivileged youth that same opportunity. They will get a chance to experience the world outside of their own and to realize how much potential exists out there. Evan’s idea was the winning submission from the travel category in the Room for Thought contest presented by American Express Canada. He will be working with Survivorman Les Stroud on his project, Second Chance Travel Co-op.
Nearly 3,200 people voted for their favourite big idea in the categories of travel, music and community in the Room For Thought contest. Andrew Huang (above) was chosen for his interactive music installation, Ghost II and will be working with Emily Haines, lead singer of Metric. Lisa Shanker (left) will have the opportunity to be mentored by Marc and Craig Kielburger of Free the Children to create a Survivor Garden to help those healing from cancer and other illnesses.
All three winners will see their idea come to life in a visually stunning display at The Four Seasons Centre from November 8th to the 22nd. The ‘Room For Thought’ installation will be open to the public with each experience lasting three days. Make sure you drop in to have a look. Wendy and I will be on hand to participate, hope to see you there and congratulations to all three winners!
