Coldplay's Unstaged Concert from Madrid

A sponsored hip + urban girl post.

What a whirlwind.

I am officially back from a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Spain, where I saw Coldplay – part of the American Express Unstaged music series – in Madrid’s famous Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas.

The forecast kept calling for rain, which had us all nervous, since the venue was an open-air bullring. It was during Yellow, the second song of the night, that a light mist began cutting through the glow of a yellow concert stage, creating a dreamy ambiance for the rest of the show. But a tiny bit of water couldn’t dampen our moods – or the experience.

My favourite moment had to be jumping up and down with 25,000 other concert-goers to Viva La Vida in the rain. A close second was singing Fix You with all the American Express Canada bloggers attending the event and ending the night in a big group hug, not quite believing our past 72 hours together. (HUG was there along with 1loveTO, She Does The City and Mike’s Bloggity Blog – all thanks to Amex!) Coldplay pulled out all the stops with butterfly confetti cannons showering the audience, beach balls tumbling down from the top of the stadium and fireworks to finish off the night.

We heard a few things off Coldplay’s new album Mylo Xyloto, as well as a string of their hits. Frontman Chris Martin ran over to our section at the end of the concert and wrote ‘Madrid’ on one of the projection screens. We were so close that we could smell the spray paint. We all kept looking at each other thinking, “Am I really in Spain? Is this really happening right now?”

Coldplay’s Unstaged experience is the sixth in this original American Express series and the first concert outside of North America. It was live-streamed in HD as a VEVO event with YouTube to fellow music enthusiasts around the world. So I wasn’t just watching the concert with the 25,000 others packed into the stadium – I was watching it with millions!

A big shout out has to go to our concierge team Marie-Eve and Elizabeth over at American Express, who put together stellar trip recommendations. If you’re a Platinum Cardmember – I suggest taking advantage of this complimentary service.

In addition to the stellar concierge service we received, we also worked with the Amex Personalized Travel Services team, who took care of booking the fancy Town Car that picked me up from my downtown Toronto condo and drove me to Pearson airport.

Once there, our Platinum card got us access to the Plaza Platinum Premium Lounge inside Terminal One, where we were able to relax with complimentary beverages and snacks while sitting in our comfy chairs and using the free Wi-Fi. Since Platinum Cardmembers also get to use an extra-fast security line, make sure you look for it next time you travel.

Once in Spain, we were treated like rock stars at Hotel de Las Letras (left), a hip boutique hotel in the centre of Madrid, again, complements of the Amex Personalized Travel Services team. I can tell that they took location into serious consideration – we were able to walk everywhere.

Missed the concert? You can still watch clips from Coldplay’s Unstaged performance on their YouTube page http://www.youtube.com/coldplayvevo
