Activity-A-Week: Go CrossFit!

CrossFit is not for the faint of heart or the out-of-shape (see me). I refer to it as the time I almost died. Okay, that's my dramatic low-impact exercise self talking - but let's not try to fool anyone here. CrossFit is hard.

It requires some serious boot camp moves all done under a ticking clock. You feel crazy when you're doing it - but afterwards...your muscles feel and look amazing. Think push-ups, thrusters, chin-ups and a 400 metre run done three times over.

CrossFit is efficient. The whole thing took about an hour, you'll burn a crapload of calories by combining strength training and cardio in competition with others on your team.

Each class starts with an orientation and warm-up before the trainer for your group walks you through the moves for the day. The routine changes daily so no one gets bored and you are pushed to challenge yourself.

After practising our form for each move, we start the circuit three times over while timing ourselves and competing with each other. If you enjoy a little friendly competition, CrossFit will work for you.

I could barely finish two circuits that day and gave it my all - I think I would have to work up to three. The competition part can take anywhere from 20-30 minutes to complete from your one hour session.

Once everyone is done, we score our times on the whiteboard against others who have been there that day.

I can't say I loved CrossFit, but I can see why people are attracted to it. You get your workout done in an exciting and efficient way and you're pushing yourself hard.

Reebok has opened a dedicated CrossFit gym in Liberty Village that is open seven days a week. Beginners should look into signing up for a Foundations Class first to get well acquainted with the basics. This style of workout reminds me of Bodypump and it's taking North America by storm - it's worth a try at least. To learn more:
