In celebration of Belgium’s upcoming 181st birthday, The Bier Markt has created Belgium-inspired Food and Beer Flights. A great way for newbies, or connoisseurs alike, to try Belgian-style food and some of Belgium’s finest beers. From now until July 21st, guests can enjoy 6oz glasses of Stella Artois Lager, Hoegaarden White Ale and Leffe Blond Abbey Ale for $15. Want to give the art of food and beer pairing a try? Get a food flight for $10 which includes mini samplings of Croque Monsieur, Grilled Prawns and a Braised Short Rib. Both beer and food flights have been designed to balance and complement each other when paired.
Food Flight $10:
From left to right - Croque Monsieur, toasted bread topped with Black Forest ham and melted Emmental cheese – savoury and crispy! The Grilled Prawns came with a spoonful of chopped dill potatoes – the prawns were sweet and nicely cooked, while the potatoes were bursting with dill. The Braised Short Rib was tender and cooked just right.
Beer Flight $15:
Each beer was unique. Stella was subtle and mellow, Hoegaarden light and citrusy while Leffe was strong, spicy and fruity.
The Bier Markt has a very extensive beer menu. I feared opening up the menu would be a bit daunting. Having gone through specific training, the staff is very knowledgeable and each meal lists a selection of recommended beers for pairing.
Since I have a serious sweet tooth I knew I could not leave without trying one of their decadent desserts. On recommendation by my server, I went with the Flourless Chocolate Cake paired with Fruli Strawberry Wheat Ale and Gulden Draak beer. This turned out to be my favourite pairing. Both beers and the dessert would have been delicious on their own, but together dessert and beer pairing came to life for me.
The Flourless Chocolate Cake was a rich piece of chocolaty heaven topped with strawberries and a mound of whipped cream. Warm and moist, it had just the right amount of dark chocolate ganache. It was divine. The refreshing strawberry notes in Fruli was a wonderful light addition to the dessert, while the sweet and full port-like Gulden Draak (definitely a sipping beer!) was well matched with the decadence of the chocolate. A great way to end the evening!
The King West location has plenty of character. There are two seating areas available, a casual and bustling sidewalk patio and an indoor main dining room and bar on a lower level. With red accents and candlelight, the stone walled interior of the main dining room makes for a moody, relaxed and sophisticated feel. It's nice for a romantic evening with your beau or meeting up for dinner and drinks with a group of friends. Live music is available at 10pm from Thursday to Saturday. The dining room is very lively, be prepared to use your loud voice in order to hear each other. If you are planning a special occasion or a night out, get in touch with their reservations coordinator to book tables in advance. Reservations can be made until 8:30pm.
All three Bier Markt locations will be celebrating Belgium’s Birthday with a special event on July 21st at 7pm. Get an opportunity to go behind a portable mini bar and learn to master the perfect Belgian pour. For $4 per pour you get to keep the glass and the beer.
Vat are you vaiting for? Hurry on over to any one of their three locations ünd experience the tastes of Belgium and Europe.
