Our Fall Trend Report: Yorkdale Style Search

Never one to shy away from a challenge, I'm currently vying for my dream job as Style Director for Yorkdale Shopping Centre in a social media based contest (#yorkdalestylesearch). My styled looks  above posted to Pinterest got me through to top 10 and then I was asked to scope Yorkdale shops to create a fall trend report "blog style" to make it through to top 5 along with completing a style questionnaire and a personal interview. I wanted to make trends accessible so I focused on 4 easy to follow trend categories that anyone can  incorporate this season.
Here's my entry below:
From runway to rack, fall's trends are officially in store. This season, more than ever, it's effortless to adopt the latest look. Here's a foolproof guide to the 4 major must-haves found amongst our retailers. They're guaranteed to blow a breath of crisp autumn air into your wardrobe.
For once, fall begs us to toss dark neutrals in favour of major hits of colour. Tones of merlot, mustard, cobalt, moss and even shades of vibrant magenta or soft peach are at the top of every fashion lovers list. Wear a single pop of colour with neutrals, try colour blocking with fall's rich jewel tones, or dare to be seen by donning your favourite hue head to toe.
If you’ve shied away from pattern in the past, now is the time to inject your style with a dose of print. Try adding one piece of plaid, geometric, floral or animal print to break up solids for starters. If you’re more adventurous with style opt to mix and match for a look straight off the runway.

Cooler weather usually gives way to thicker, textured fabrics, and this season is no exception. Choose luxe knits, fur or leather detail, brocades, sheers and loads of embellishments, even for day time. They can all be layered for stylish results.

Fall’s hottest silhouettes for women air on the side of dramatic ranging from prominent peplums to oversized outwear and sweaters while gents are moving towards ultra-tailored suiting with a slim fit. Cropped to the ankle trousers are hot for both sexes and ladies take a cue from the men with the smoking slipper as a hot item for footwear. Adding these new silhouettes to your closet provides an instant update... Bonus points if you choose colour, pattern or textured versions, of course.

Fingers crossed I make it to top 5. Wish me luck!

  1. No disrespect, but the looks are really safe and kind of matronly. I think of Yorkdale being a bit more hip. I don't know the age group their going after so I shouldn't say. Who are the other contestants? Is Hip Urban Girl going to feature everyone so we can compare?

  2. Good luck fellow contestant! Good job on pulling looks together! I'm partial to you Textured styles!

  3. Hi Laura - We are just featuring Tamika's entry on our site because she is our style contributor. I'm sure Yorkdale may post all the other entries via their website.

    Thanks for reading!

  4. Thanks Julio, good luck you to as well! Would love to have a style off with you in the top 5 since there's no point in competition if you don't have great competitors ;) Fingers crossed!

Laura, thanks so much for your feedback. You're absolutely right, the images I shared are definitely safe, not edgy. I photographed looks from mannequins around the mall with a goal of pulling basic trends that anyone can get into regardless of style level, but should I be chosen for the role I'd definitely have a wider range of styling advice to share for those who can pull of a more fashion forward look.

    1. hmm... "pull OFF a more fashion forward look" ;) hehe. typos.
