Art, Wine & Music: 1st Thursdays @ The AGO

Toronto is such a great city with so many happenings. I have another one to add to your monthly calendar: 1st Thursdays at the Art Gallery of Ontario! 1st Thursdays launched on October 4th and tickets were sold out before it began which is a definite indication of the success of this night. The AGO is a lovely venue to visit but it becomes an even more magical space when opened for a special evening event like this. Imagine wandering the galleries with a glass of wine in hand while DJs spin records.
The night was filled with a variety of events including artist Evan Penny talking about his work that is currently begin exhibited. Re Figured is a collection of his larger-than-life sculptures that really need to be seen in-person. Their stretched and skewed features make you question what you are really looking at.
The Italian Galleria had DJ Syrus Marcus Ware blaring his tunes while DJ Humble Mike spun records in Walker Court. On another floor, nude drawings allowed any guest to take their turn at sketching the naked model standing before them. Throughout the AGO, bars were set up to keep everyone well hydrated.

At 9 pm, Bahamas took the stage in Walker Court and played an intimate solo performance under the gorgeous Frank Gehry staircase. while his incredible voice filled the room.
The cost for all of this fun is a mere $10 (or $8 for AGO members) when you buy tickets in advanced. The next 1st Thursday will take place on Thursday, November 1st and I cannot wait to see just what the AGO has planned for this one!

The Art Gallery of Ontario is a great place to get in tune with your creative side. Membership for individuals is only $100 annually, giving you access to the galleries anytime. The next big exhibition opens soon with a show of two of my favourite Mexican painters, Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo. It is definitely not one to be missed.
