Put Your Paws Up For A Cause!

The third annual Paws for the Cause Gala drew Toronto stylistas and scenesters this past Thursday at the ultra-urban 99 Sudbury event space. The annual soiree raises money for animal welfare organizations and this year proceeds from the event went to the Central Toronto Veterinary Referral Clinic.

Special guests of the evening were Maddie the Coonhound of www.maddieonthings.com fame and her owner and personal photographer, Theron Humphrey. The dynamic duo were on hand to officially open the silent auction of Maddie’s intriguing and often humourous photos of her “on things”.
Joe Fresh was also on hand to raise money at the event. For a donation, party-goers received a fresh tube of Joe Fresh lipstick and could leave their signature pucker on a wall which served as a fashionable guestbook. The theme of this year’s Paws for the Cause Gala was “99 Problems But a Bitch Ain’t One”. Guests were able to purchase raffle tickets and could pop one of 99 red balloons for a chance of winning fabulous prizes donated by Holt Renfrew and other fashionable companies.

The main attraction of the night was the doggie fashion show which preceded the silent auction. Hosted by CP24’s Melissa Grelo, the doggie fashion show featured bedazzled, dip-dyed, and faux-tattooed fur modelled by very happy pups that were unphased by the flash of camera bulbs as they walked on stage. Erica Chau, who works for the National Association of Professional Creative Groomers (NAPCG), provided the dogs with their new looks which were non-toxic and not harmful to the animals.

I spoke with Melissa Grelo after her hosting duties were finished and it was easy to see that she’s a true dog lover. Talking with pride about her Doberman, she told me how excited she was to be hosting the show that helps dogs in need. She was a fitting host for the event not only because she is a dog owner, but because she donates some of her spare time to help raise funds for the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA).

Whether you are a dog lover, a dog owner, or both, consider attending the event when it rolls around again next year. You will be sure to see some adorable dogs, chat with proud dog owners and contribute to a great cause. If you can’t wait until next year to support the cause, you can make a donation online at www.pawsforthecause.ca.
