Urban Eats @ Ramen Underground, San Francisco

It's strange this place is called Ramen Underground because it's located street level in the busy Financial District of San Francisco.

I realize some of the best foods are from restaurants with a simple menu - they only offer a few items but they do it REALLY well. This is one of those places. Unless you count their green tea tiramisu, there's certainly nothing fancy here and the dining room seats no more than 10 people at a time. Luckily they are quick and can serve up your order within a few minutes.

Chose your own adventure! The noodles are all the same but you get to pick the broth - spicy, soy, miso, salty, tomato, vegetable and soy milk ($8-9). Toppings such as corn, chicken, pork belly, egg (and even butter!) are $1 each. Extra hungry? Noodle refills are $2.

If noodles aren't your thing, try their donburi (aka rice bowl). They also serve sushi and other light appys and you can BYOB (including beer). Corkage fee $1-5.

Like most Asian places, cash only please! And arrive early (or late) unless you like waiting in line for 15+ minute during peak lunch/dinner hours. Ramen Underground is located at 355 Kearny Street and opened Monday to Saturday.
