Co-owned and operated by Janine Cockburn and Krysten Caddy, Coal Miner’s Daughter began as an adorable and miniature shop in the Mirvish Village and it’s been growing ever since. What started as a causal friendship between neighbors grew over time (and drinks) into a warm, earthy and timeless space shared by two women with a common dream. In addition to showcasing Canadian and local designs, CMD also houses handmade clothing as well as a signature collection of sterling silver and fine gemstone jewellery lovingly designed and fabricated by the owners themselves.
Best described as fresh and feminine, Janine’s clothing line, Clementine&Tweed is constructed using both new and recycled fabrics and transports the busy woman from daycare to happy hour and beyond. “These are clothes for the girl on the go” says Janine “they’re flattering and easy to wear with unexpected sexy details”. Additional clothing lines by garment masters Valerie Dumaine, Dagg and Stacey, and Eve Gravel, ensure a range of girlie, handmade delights are available for all seasons and occasions.
Krysten’s jewellery line, also called Coal Miner’s Daughter, blends natural gemstones and metals. “This line inspires a sense of simplicity and resourcefulness; the idea of making something beautiful out of nothing” says Caddy. For shoppers seeking statement pieces, Armed by Desiree Girlato offers vintage reloaded. This Toronto made collection features vintage inspired pieces modernized with chunky bone and turquoise.
With creations from over 30 designers, the cozy showcases and fancy frames of CMDs Mirvish Village and Queen West locations, nearly everything customers see in the shop is homegrown. “We’ve made a commitment to always carry at least 80 percent Canadian designers in both of our stores” says Krysten. “This is something that makes us unique."
Entrepreneurs, business ladies, and genuinely nice people, Janine and Krysten have kept CMD in a state of constant evolution. And it’s paying off. After expanding to larger space in the Mirvish Village on Market Street the ladies recently celebrated the grand opening of a second store on Queen Street West. With business expanding and an online store ready to launch in 2013, Coal Miner’s Daughter is always looking for fresh creations from new designers. To check out the latest designer creations at Coal Miner’s Daughter head to one of their two Toronto locations at 587 Markham Street and 744 Queen Street West.
