Activity-A-Week: Quad Spinning

A few months ago I signed up to participate in the Ride to Conquer Cancer Benefiting the Princess Margaret Hospital. Last week it occurred to me that the epic, 200km ride from Toronto to Niagara was a mere five months away and I have yet to begin my training. Feeling a little underprepared and a lot terrified, I headed to Quad East to kick-off my training in style and with big sound.

Quad is a Toronto-based spin gym with three locations in the GTA. Committed to providing a positive and welcoming atmosphere where clients feel pampered and challenged regardless of age or ability, Quad brings the very best in instructors, facility and experience.

I walk into the two floor open concept space at noon hour for my 45-minute endurance class and am greeted by beautiful exposed brick, beams and burnt wood accents that surround the 60 spin bikes standing at attention in front of what I will call the instructor’s stage.

The open and inviting space on the second floor (used for boot camp, x-fit programs) contains free weights, a chin up rack and plenty of space for spinners to stretch after a class. This space is warm, filled with light and begs you to sit down and meditate-even if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Staff are keen to help spinners properly set up their bikes and ride safely. I am informed that simply raising my hand during a class will result in a staff member coming by to pick up my water bottle and refill it for me while I ride. Ah, service.

Once class begins its easy to forget that you’re working out and not at an amazing club or rock show. The folks at Quad East have done their homework and invested in a killer sound system that gets riders pumped up and motivated throughout the session. Instructors compile amazing playlists to complement the workout and plug in to the system via a huge receiver and mixing board sitting alongside their spin bike.

Our 45 workout consists of a thorough warm-up followed by a series of difficult hills, flat sprints and high resistance strength building all expertly led by our instructor who is calm and relentless. Class wraps up with a deep stretch and round of applause from the group.
As I leave the Quad I feel invigorated and pampered but most of all I feel ready to ride my bike to Niagara Falls.
