A chic new bakery has opened up in Toronto’s busy King West neighborhood. Think daily baked cookies, brownies, personal mason jar cheesecakes + mousses along with ready-to-go celebration cakes. It's the perfect place to pick up a quick dessert or to order yourself something a little better than a grocery store birthday cake.
ps by prettysweet is the brainchild of owner Adjoa Duncan who has a long resume in pastry from restaurants such as Splendido, Sen5es, Schilling’s and a few stints abroad in London. What started as a custom cake business in 2008, has now evolved into a pretty storefront with a pale pink café that's filled with vintage tables and chairs and has whimsical whisk chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. Adjoa's very loyal clients have stuck with her from their wedding cakes, baby showers and other celebration cakes once word-of-mouth of her talent quickly spread.
I brought home one of their chocolate mousse desserts in a mason jar ($5.50) and le husband couldn't stop raving about how good it was! It was rich and chocolatey without being too sweet which just made you eat more. Best thing about desserts in a jar? Pop the lid on it and eat more later.
So is there a signature dessert that you must-try? "Pretty much everything on the menu is something I love. The chocolate chip cookie is something I worked really hard on getting that cookie to the way I wanted it." says Adjoa. My personal favourite was for sure the blondies which were like melted buttery and chewy cake goodness...heaven.
I stopped in for a coffee and a sweet treat - everything is homemade with real butter, sugar, fresh fruit and eggs. You'll find no hydrogenated oils or mixes here. I also found all of the desserts to be pleasingly sweet and not over-the-top in anyway that didn't make you feel like the dessert wasn't anything but perfectly balanced. ps by prettysweet also carries a selection of teas from Tealish.
