Summer Patio Round-up: Vertical Restaurant & Bar

As a King Street resident, I’m a bit annoyed that I didn’t know about Vertical Restaurant & Bar sooner. This buzzy spot is tucked away on the mezzanine level of First Canadian Place, under the shadows of towering skyscrapers and high rises. But for the past year or so, Vertical has been blocked off by street construction and is just re-entering the Toronto summer patio scene.
With the construction now gone, the restaurant is back in full swing. The patio boasts an outdoor bar, cocktail tables, and stylish wicker furniture, offering a laid back atmosphere for lunch or an after-work drink. With people swarming and drinks circulating, this place shows that “If you build it, they will come.”

Inside, Vertical has a sleek bar with a contemporary ambiance. It also has two private dining rooms available for lunch or dinner functions.
Take your time to study the wine and cocktail menu, as it’s pretty extensive. Vertical offers a decent selection of Canadian and international wines, with facts and hints about the drinks written in the menu’s margins. The cocktails are ideal for something light and chilly in the midst of this summer heat.
It’s no surprise that the seasonal menu is inspired by the diverse regions of Italy. Chef Giacomo Pasquini was born and raised in Senigallia, a town located along the Adriatic coast in the Marche region of central Italy. Whole fish, fresh handmade pasta and naturally-raised Ontario beef are specialties, with a focus on fresh, local ingredients. Plus, the restaurant has received a nod of approval from Ocean Wise for their use of sustainable seafood.

Don’t wait too long to check out Vertical Restaurant – the patio will fill up quickly once the word gets out.
