Work + Play For Creative Types at The Spoke Club

Though our city boasts several private, members-only clubs, there are less than a handful that appeal to me personally as a female, creative entrepreneur under 40. The Spoke Club tops my personal list because of its airy work and play spaces, stellar menus (Peking duck poutine!) and interesting yet approachable members.

A hidden landmark on the King West strip, established in 2004, this members only hub of creatives occupies floors two through four plus a gorgeous rooftop inside an well appointed, but unpretentious hundred year old building at the corner of King and Portland, one block east of Bathurst.

If you've not been invited inside by a member but frequent the area, chances are you've probably walked right past on your way to the neighbouring Bier Market or Hamman Spa. I was introduced about 4 years ago by a colleague who was a member and over the years have been invited back many times for meetings, dinners and media events and have hosted several events for my own business within the space.

Club amenities: a cozy library that usually doubles as a co-working space, private event spaces, bars and lounge areas, an art gallery, film screening room, fine dining including private dining facilities, a full calendar of arts and culture events and privileges in reciprocal clubs in New York, London, Budapest, Dublin, Shanghai, Tokyo and Hong Kong.

Membership is open to those in creative fields, the arts or entertainment exclusively and will run you about $800 per year with a one time initiation fee of $500. Those 28 and under enjoy an amazing discounted membership of just $400 -- something I wish I had been privy to way back when.
This year to celebrate their tenth anniversary, I'm super excited to have been invited to work and play as a member for 2014.  To this end I'll be hosting even more events inside The Spoke Club's walls and dishing on life as a member covering everything from dining experiences to members only events and even profiling members I think you should meet via our Hip + Urban Girl of the week feature. I'm already gearing up for April's Spoke Design Studio to learn interior design tips for an expert and an Easter Egg Hunt  that's rumoured to be quite the riddle. If the extended winter ever ends I'll definitely be a fixture on the fifth floor when the the roof top patio opens late May.

*Insider scoop* In September that very rooftop often transforms into Nikki Beach for TIFF!

If you're curious about any aspect of the club leave me a comment and I'll consider it for a future post inclusion about my year at The Spoke Club and if you want to join me next time I host event there be sure to   follow Shop Socials on Twitter for details on how to get on the guest list.
