Kinimi: Little Black Dress on a Big Mission

If your calendar is like the average hip urban girl, it's no doubt that your little black dresses will work overtime during the holidays. With a staple that gets this much mileage, wouldn't  it be nice to flaunt a piece that feels as fabulous to invest in as it looks on your figure? Loosely designed as a modern kimono style wrap dress, Kinimi offers an elevated and ethical take on the little black dress through collaborating with women's cooperatives from around the world to preserve traditional artisan craftsmanship and create beautiful, timeless pieces using sustainably-sourced materials. I had the pleasure of chatting with Kinimi co-founder, Nicole Goldberger, to learn more about this little black dress on big mission to empower women around the world by providing sustainable employment and fair wages.

Q: What inspired you to launch Kinimi?
A: I have always had a passion for travelling off the beaten track. During trips to Uganda, Cambodia and Morocco I encountered truly incredible women artisans who were creating handwoven handicrafts but they did not realize the value in their work. One afternoon my co-founder and I were discussing our love of travel, artisan crafts and the desire to help others and the idea for Kinimi was formed.

Q: What are your favourite ways to wear your Kinimi for the holidays?
A: What I love the most about the Kinimi signature wrap dress and obi sash is that you can customize your dress depending on your holiday party. Each obi sash is handwoven by a different women's cooperative from around the world. This allows you to dress your outfit up or down based on the design you choose. My favourite way to wear Kinimi for the holidays is to tie the obi sash in a small bow on the side of your dress. Make sure to finish it off with killer pumps and a smile :)

Q: What celeb do you want to sneak a Kinimi to and why?
A: I would love to see Kinimi worn by Oprah, Angelina Jolie, and Emma Watson. Each of these women represent Kinimi - they are beautiful, confident, strong and empower others.

Q: You travel a lot, of course, where's Kinimi headed to next?
A: Kinimi is headed to Bhutan to meet with our amazing weaving partners in January! You can sign up now at to keep up to date on our blog as we take you on a journey with us around the world, sharing stories from our artisan partners and about their communities or follow our journey via social media on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter
