Scandinave Spa Blue Mountain

By Wendy Kam Marcy

Pull yourself away from the concrete jungle, hop into your car for a 2.5 hour drive heading North West and you will find yourself in a forested mecca where doing nothing but floating in pools of tranquil water and day dreaming is perfectly acceptable.

I recently made a retreat to Scandinave Spa with hubby to unplug and relax. There truly is no better way than indulging in a Nordic bath experience to unwind and reset!

This outdoor spa is situated on 25 acres of forested land - it's as tranquil as it can get so make sure you turn off your phone and use your spa voice! The experience begins with sitting in a wood-burning Finnish sauna or eucalyptus steam room for about 10 minutes. This helps open up pores and begin the detoxifying process.

Next comes the cold plunge or in the winter, you can lie in the snow and make snow angels! Yes, it's wickedly cold but the purpose of the plunge is to enhance blood circulation, increase heart rate and close the pores. The key is to step right into the cold pools rather than taking your time to meander in.

The third phase is my favourite - ahhhh relaxation. Take your time and melt your worries and stress away in one of the 3 hot baths, soak in the thermal and nordic waterfalls or rest in one of the solariums with a magazine.

The common areas and pools are spacious with lots of curved nooks, so its never too awkward sitting in a hot tub with a bunch of strangers. The spa is co-ed and everyone wears a bathing suit. I recommend bringing a bottle of water and flip-flops. They supply the towels and bath robes can be rented for $12.

Ideally you would repeat this circuit three to four times to maximize the full effect of your hydrotherapy and rid your body of those negative toxins.

The spa is open year-round and depending on what time of the year you go, the experience is different. In the summer, the spa is nestled in a green oasis. It's the perfect place to read and catch some sun in one of their hammocks. During the winter - when I prefer to go, the spa is transformed into a winter wonderland.

If you are wondering just how cold it gets... well you will be hopping from one circuit to another and the clean crisp air on your skin feels more inviting and refreshing than chilly. It's also the perfect excuse to grab one of their Muskoka chairs and cozy up around the camp fire with your date.

Plan at least 1.5 to 2 hours for the Scandinavian Bath experience and more if you are booking a treatment. They offer massages from relaxation to RMT sports massages to hot stone therapy starting at $130.

Booking a treatment includes access to all the Scandinavian Baths but if you are just going to the spa alone, it is $50 per person and $40 on Unwind Wednesdays. They also have private yoga classes and an on-site Bistro that serves healthy salads, sandwiches, teas and fresh juices.

I highly recommend Scandinave Spa for an easy getaway outside the city. I felt completely rejuvenated, like we were on some sort of luxurious vacation but at a fraction of the cost. Lots of overnight accommodations are available in Blue Mountain Village or Collingwood if you want to make a weekend getaway out of it.
