Millennial-Gen Y Travel Trends

By Wendy Kam Marcy

In the last few years, hubby and I have taken some great vacation with our parents and in-laws. Yes, this sounds mighty scary but it's really not! With careful planning and strategically choosing a destination that offers a balance of adventure and relaxation, cultural immersion and of course, diverse activites, we've all managed to not step on each other's toes too much and always come home with happy and fun memories.

As I start to think about travel plans and where I would like to take my family this year, I came across some interesting trends in a 2015 report created by InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) along with some beautiful and really cool places to stay.

When it comes to identity, 23% of Millennials say they want to stay in hotels that say something about them, versus 11 % of Boomers. This doesn't come as a surprise since 31% of Millennials share their travel pictures online, versus 11% Boomers.

This exotic beach resort in the heart of Patong, Phuket's most famous beach definitely resonates with me. I love contemporary design and dining in expansive airy spaces - hello photo opp and selfie stick! Holiday Inn Resort Phuket is definitely on the top of my list. Let's hope the rest of the family agrees!

Since Millennials are always "plugged-in", 44% of us prefer booking hotel services from our mobile phone versus 26% of Boomers who prefer to call in to speak to a real person.

Yup, can't argue with that as I remember my trip to Macau was booked almost entirely online using my laptop and smartphone. Everything from the TurboJet we took from Hong Kong to Macau, to booking our stay at the Holiday Inn Macao Cotai Central, dinner reservations to spa appointments and even room service!

If Millennials are looking to impress their social circles with "eye candy" and boomers are more focused on price and getting small “perks” or personal touches during their stay, both groups will appreciate making a trip to the Big Apple and checking in here...

Hotel Indigo New York City Chelsea, also part of IHG offers unique experiences that reflects the culture of the neighborhood. I love these personal touches in their d├ęcor, the music in the lobby and menu offerings. Plush bedding, spa style bathrooms, and complimentary wifi are also perks you can always expect at this hotel chain. It's a win/win for all!

Are you planning any trips this year? Whether it’s an overnight getaway, a business trip, a family celebration or a once-in-a-lifetime experience, InterContinental Hotels Group which includes Intercontinental Hotels and Resorts, Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza, Hotel Indigo, Candlewood Suites and more offers 4,700 properties in nearly 100 countries - which means they have the perfect hotel for everyone's needs.
