Urban Eats @ Big Gay Ice Cream Shop - NYC

By: Lisa Ng

One of my absolute must-eats whenever I'm in New York City is a delicious soft-serve cone from Big Gay Ice Cream. What started out as a gourmet ice cream truck with luxurious and over-the-top flavours has morphed into a brick + mortar shop with two locations in the East + West Village.

Serious props to the owners for elevating the humble ice cream truck and taking it to the next level. Locations in Philly + LA are currently in the works! So what do you order when you get there?

The Bea Arthur ($4.50) – Golden Girls really was the best show ever. It was on everyday at 5:30 pm on CBC when I came home from school. So of course, this was my choice cone. Vanilla soft-serve ice cream rolled in crushed nila wafers and showered in glorious dulce de leche topping. Auntie Bea would be proud.

The Salty Pimp ($5) – I didn’t get the Salty Pimp, but this photo from NY Serious Eats (Robyn Lee) makes it look pretty goddamn amazing. First of all, I never say no to things dipped in chocolate. It is a life rule – trust me, if you live by it everything is automatically 150% better!!! This sweet treat combines vanilla soft serve with dulce de leche drizzle and crunchy sea salt before it’s immortalized in chocolate. So haaard to decide on a cone when I was here, but I would narrow it down to these two.

If you’re visiting NYC, make sure you haul yourself down to the East or West Village for a fun ice cream creation. The specials are constantly changing, but you can definitely count on the Salty Pimp.
