One of my favourite places to bring visitors to LA is The Getty Villa in Malibu. It's great to make an afternoon of it and book in for their Tea By the Sea on a Saturday afternoon.
It's a gorgeous drive up the PCH to Malibu with stunning ocean views. The Getty Villa is the former estate of oil tycoon Paul Getty, who turned his property into a museum and art gallery perched above the Pacific Ocean. It's great if you can get up there on a sunny and clear day.
I booked my afternoon tea at 1 PM and joined a garden tour at 2:30 PM and spent the rest of the day exploring all the art inside The Getty. Admission to The Getty Villa is FREE, however parking is $15. Tea By the Sea is served on Thursdays and Saturdays only with a single seating beginning at 1 PM in the Founder's Room, which features floor-to-ceiling windows with views of the property.
The menu is inspired by the herbs, vegetables, and fruits that grow in the Villa's authentically re-created first-century Roman gardens. I highly recommend joining the optional garden tour after so you can see firsthand where all your lunch ingredients came from. Our guide was very friendly and we were each equipped with a portable headset so we could hear everything clearly.
We were treated to savoury sandwiches, warm scones, mini cakes, tarts, fruits, cheeses and a selection of tea. Make sure you try Mrs. Garrett's carrot cake - a beloved recipe of Jean Garrett, the late wife of the Museum's first director, Stephen Garrett.
Afternoon Tea is $36 per person, plus tax and 18% gratuity. Reservations are a must and can be made via phone at 1 (800) 369-3059.
