Michael's has become my go-to neighbourhood bistro in Santa Monica.
They host an an incredible all-night happy hour with top rate apps and along with beer, cocktails and wine ranging from $5-8. Happy Hour runs from 5 PM to close - SIX nights a week. It’s a steal, located on Third Street just beyond where the promenade ends.
Here are a few of my favourites from a recent tasting I attended:
($6) are served up with a ponzu aioli. The Shitake Mushroom Pizza ($15) with thyme, sweet onion and creamy fontina cheese is a meal-sized portion and very easy to share if you’re grabbing cocktails with a group.
For my dinner, I chose the Maine Diver Scallops ($29) which were perfectly seared and served with flowering broccoli, crispy fried polenta, pearl onions and fresh radishes. Each scallop was so tender and buttery it was difficult not to swallow them up whole. The polenta provided a nice contrast in texture.
If you’re feeling steak, you’ll enjoy Michael’s take on Steak Frites ($44) which is a juicy 28-day dry-aged NY steak glistening with butter and served with a side of crispy shoestring fries. It was a toss-up for me between this dish and the scallops for me, but I did get to steal a little piece of steak from one of my dining companions and it was so, so good.
Creme Fraiche Panna Cotta with pomegranate
“The main reason I decided to become a restaurateur was that I love to entertain people, to show them a really wild time. And when things are going right at a party or in a restaurant—great food and great service with the right mix of people in the perfect setting—nothing beats it” says McCarty.
Dining at his restaurant felt very comfortable and not stuffy. The service was friendly and attentive and Michael makes everyone feel at home.
