Change seems to be the constant in my life. And it was almost 2 years ago, that the BIGGEST CHANGE happened (for the better)... I became a Mother to an adorable baby boy.
So issues around youth have been more on my radar and a bigger focus in my life. When Telus invited me to participate in We Day, I felt really honoured and excited!
We Day is a powerful, life-changing international event that combines a live concert with the inspiration of extraordinary stories of leadership and change.
See those little sparks?
That’s 20,000 supporters (mostly kids) filling up the ACC! As I stood in the centre of it all, I was enveloped in the most amazing energy. The kind that sends goosebumps down your arm and warms your heart.
I had to hold back tears as I realized that this millennial generation is more than what the media has portrayed them to be - spoiled, entitled and emoji obsessed.
Here were thousands of kids who dedicated a year to community service and acts of kindness (one local and one global) and as a reward, they got to attend We Day. You couldn’t buy a ticket to this exclusive event but had to earn your seat. How cool is that?
Throughout the day, I hung out with fellow bloggers in the TELUS media box. Demi Lovato, Shawn Mendez, Carly Rae Jepson, Hedley and Francesco Yates (which I got to meet backstage!) rocked the stage to be expected. But the best part of the show for me was the inspiring speeches by Craig and Marc Kielburger, Alex Deans, Toni Morgan and more.
The common theme was that we have the power to change the world.
My favourite speech was delivered by Tevi Gerrivson. As a blogger, it really resonated with me. She talks about how she started her fashion blog thinking she wasn’t original enough. Hard to imagine because if you’ve read any of Tavi’s stuff you will be stunned to learn that her work is stacked with authenticity and creative witty thoughts - that girl can write!
Tavi’s advice is simple... soak up as much as you can of other people’s work and eventually, you’ll learn to spin it and make it your own. She uses the example of Vincent van Gogh, who copied Jean-François Millet in his earlier work. It’s called “inspiration”! And the outcome? Tavi’s annual masterpiece: Rookie Year Book which is HER creation but also SHARES the DNA with some of her favourite people and things.
As cliche as it sounds, We Day left me motivated, inspired and definitely sparked my passion to encourage me to make changes in my life so I can create a better world for my son.
